THE Trip - Day 5 (Hike x 3 = Tired)

“Morning afters” of any type can be a bit daunting…especially those that involve unused muscles.  Mine were slow warming up to activity after yesterday’s uphill hike; but the sunshine and cool temperatures were a teasing invitation to get moving and get outdoors.

What a surprise awaited Dennis and I as we pulled into the parking area by the harbor entrance in the town of Trinidad, CA.   The City’s Headland Trail lured us with the prospect of wonderful views of the Pacific and the waterway used by many migrating whales.  The monument identified the originating Portuguese navigators who landed here.

As we moved further north, the towering redwood trees took center stage as we drove along the coast.  To see them better in an up close and personal way, we stopped at Elk Meadows.  With a herd of elk near the parking lot to establish the feel of the area, we decided to hike the Trillium Trail which took us deep into the redwood forest.  It was a quiet walk with very few other hikers on the trail.

By mid-afternoon we had moved only a few miles to the Prairie Creek Visitors Center – our last planned stop along the lengthy series of state and national parks that protect the redwoods in this part of the country.  This hike was a mix of 4 trails that took us by some of the world’s largest trees.  Amazing trees with such dignity of bearing.

The tall trees, lush green plant life, and abundant water in creeks and streams made me feel like I was a “real hiker in the deep woods”.
