Plastic bottles of water line the shelves in the grocery store - each proclaiming to be from a ‘special spring’ or ‘icy glacier’. After our hike in Mount Rainier National Park, I will now be checking to see if any of the water in the bottles I buy just might be coming from one of the many glaciers at the very top of Mt. Rainier.
Our hike was another uphill walk in a quiet woods beside the Paradise
River which flows into the Nisqually River which we crossed to get started on
the trail.
As we approached the first
waterfalls, we noticed a 20” pipe coming down beside of the path. Upon closer inspection, it turned out to be a
pipe made of wooden slats about 10 feet in length and held together by sturdy
wire. The whole setup reminded me of
wood barrels used for making and transporting wine. We weren’t sure if there was an inner liner,
but it had the look and sound of wood.
The pipe would be visible for awhile by the path, and then disappear,
only to re-appear farther off into the woods. A mystery indeed....
When we explored down at the river’s edge, we found the water to be very,
very cold…almost as if it were 'icy glacial' water - just unbottled..
